When it comes to oil and gas drilling, the performance of pipe connections plays a critical role in ensuring well integrity, pressure control, and long-term reliability. There are two main categories of threads used in casing and tubing: Premium Threads and API (American Petroleum Institute) Threads.
Premium Threads
Premium thread designs are engineered to exceed the performance of standard API connections. They offer enhanced sealing mechanisms, higher torque capacity, and improved resistance to corrosion, fatigue, and pressure fluctuations. These threads are used in challenging environments such as deepwater, high-pressure, and high-temperature wells where failure is not an option. Types of premium threads include:
VAM Connections
Known for their high torque capacity and superior gas-tight sealing.
Designed to withstand extreme pressures and resist galling, even under dynamic loads.
Ideal for offshore and deepwater drilling where reliable sealing and high mechanical strength are essential.
TenarisHydril Connections
Feature a metal-to-metal seal that ensures excellent gas-tight integrity.
Enhanced resistance to environmental challenges such as corrosive fluids and high-pressure environments.
Suitable for critical applications, including deep wells and horizontal drilling.
Hunting Connections
Known for their robust design and compatibility with a wide range of casing and tubing materials.
Provide reliable performance in both standard and complex drilling operations.
Designed to handle high loads while maintaining structural integrity.
API Pipe Threads
API threads are standardized by the American Petroleum Institute and are widely used in the oil and gas industry for casing, tubing, and line pipe connections. While API threads are less complex than premium threads, they offer sufficient strength and sealing for many conventional drilling applications. Common types of API threads include:
Short Thread Coupled (STC) – Shorter thread length for faster makeup and easier handling. Suitable for moderate-depth wells and less demanding drilling environments.
Long Thread Coupled (LTC) – Longer thread engagement for enhanced strength and sealing. Commonly used in deeper wells where additional joint strength is needed.
Buttress Thread Coupled (BTC) – High axial strength and resistance to bending loads. Frequently used in high-stress applications where joint integrity is critical.
Line Pipe (LP) – Designed for transporting oil and gas. Suitable for low-pressure and low-stress environments.
External Upset End (EUE) – Features an enlarged end to improve thread strength and sealing. Commonly used for tubing and smaller-diameter casing.
Non-Upset End (NUE) – Lacks the thickened end of EUE connections, making it lighter and easier to handle. Used in lower-pressure, less demanding applications.
VIACNC Oil Country Lathes and FANUC's Arbitrary Speed Threading
Key Benefits:
Dynamic Spindle Speed Adjustment – Operators can modify spindle speed during the threading cycle, even if the spindle speed override is normally restricted.
Reduced Vibration and Chatter – Adjusting spindle speed helps to minimise cutting vibration and chatter, resulting in higher-quality threads.
Fast Rethreading and Repair – This feature allows operators to quickly resume a threading cycle when repairing or rethreading existing threads.
Automated Rethreading – The function automates what was once a highly skilled manual process, improving efficiency and consistency.
All VIACNC machines come with Arbitrary Threading as standard.
